Columbus Dumpster Disposal Rules
Before you start tossing everything into your rental dumpster, it's important to know what's allowed and what isn't. Columbus and Franklin County have specific regulations about certain materials that require special disposal. Putting prohibited items in your dumpster can result in extra fees or refused pickup.
Items That Can't Go in a Dumpster
The following materials are generally prohibited from roll-off dumpsters in the Columbus area:
- Hazardous chemicals — Pesticides, solvents, motor oil, antifreeze, and cleaning chemicals
- Paint — Liquid paint cans (dried latex paint is usually acceptable)
- Batteries — Car batteries and lithium-ion batteries
- Tires — Automotive and truck tires require separate disposal
- Appliances with refrigerants — Refrigerators, freezers, and AC units need proper Freon removal first
- Electronics — TVs, monitors, and computers are classified as e-waste in Ohio
- Medical waste — Needles, syringes, and pharmaceutical waste
Where to Dispose of Prohibited Items
Franklin County's Solid Waste Authority operates several drop-off locations for hazardous materials and electronics. The SWACO facility accepts household hazardous waste, and many Columbus-area retailers offer battery and electronics recycling.
